Every student matters: mixed ability at Secondary Help!
There’s such a range of abilities in my class! Lots of my students need extra support and some need extra challenge! Secondary teachers know every student matters, but it’s sometimes difficult to attend to everyone in a diverse class. How can scaffolding help us? How can we best utilize collaborative learning? What about digital tools? This practical session will propose strategies and activities to help us meet the demands of a mixed ability class.
Alyssa Alexander has had various roles in the field of language teaching over the past ten years. She first came to Andalusia as a language assistant in the public school system, went on to get a master ́s degree in Translation and Intercultural Studies, and worked as an English teacher in Seville up until recently. She is particularly interested in how to motivate students and how language learning can open doors to new opportunities. She now works as an ELT Consultant for Pearson and considers Spain her home.
Reading and writing just got exciting!
Reading and writing are tested extensively in external and university entrance exams, but our lessons to develop these skills needn’t be dull! In this talk we’ll look at some activities that will get our students working collaboratively to get better at reading and writing – activities that will improve their skills and bring our lessons to life.
Michael Brand is a Teacher Trainer for Pearson. Having taught in England and Spain, he has experience in the public, private and state-assisted sectors and has taught young learners, teens and adults. He now spends his time training teachers on all things ELT and his interests include collaborative learning, the creative use of video and gamifying his classes.
