Taking off from the intermediate plateau
Many learners encounter problems when moving from Intermediate (B1) to Upper Intermediate (B2) levels of language proficiency. They struggle to perceive their language progress and often feel frustrated.
This workshop will look at strategies and activities to highlight ways to help your learners take off from the Intermediate plateau.
Frances Eales is a teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer who has taught and trained in many countries including the UK, France, Hungary, Australia, Egypt, Hong Kong and Thailand. She is a co author of the Cutting Edge series and author of Speakout Starter, Elementary, Upper Intermediate and Advanced Plus developed in conjunction with the BBC (Pearson). She also set up the British Council/ International House Distance DELTA course for experienced teachers and works on the design and assessment of teaching and training exams for Cambridge English. Frances has a particular interest in the psychology of learning, the use of video, task-based learning, and collocational competence. She now works in Brighton, where her interests include hill-walking, singing and practising qi-gong in the garden every morning at six.

Making all the right noises: a closer look at B2 speaking skills – Michael Brand
Most of us teachers will understand the mechanics of the B2 speaking exams we prepare our students for and have a few tricks of the trade to give our candidates the best chance for success. But what precisely is it that a candidate at this level needs to demonstrate? Let’s take a deeper look at how to gauge if students are at the right level, what they need and how we can best help them to exam success.
Michael Brand is a Teacher Trainer for Pearson. A passionate linguist, he studied French and German at Durham University, followed by a PGCE in Modern Languages.
