Plenary

The speaking secret: making it meaningful

Learning language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. But creating opportunities for meaningful communication for primary students can be a challenge when most of their learning takes place in a classroom and they have little opportunity to practise in the ‘real’ world. Yet it is possible! In this session, we will present strategies and activities which can be practised in the classroom but elicit language that can be transferred to the real world and demonstrate that when students can see the relevance of activities they are much more motivated to produce language, especially if they can have fun at the same time!

Jacqueline Martin has a BA in Psychology and Education, a PGCE in Primary Teaching and a CELTA qualification. After university she was a UK primary teacher and Adult English teacher. She has worked in Primary ELT publishing for 16 years, firstly at Oxford University Press and then at Pearson, initially in editorial and then increasingly more strategic roles including Content Director for Primary. In January 2017 she joined the Global Scale of English team at Pearson and has been leading on the development of standards and materials for Young Learners. She has visited, researched, commissioned and published courses for more than 20 markets globally.
