Spiralling upwards: Harnessing the cyclical syllabus

The spiral syllabus has long been fundamental to coursedesign, and yet there are students as well as teachers whoexperience the revision of language “input” as repetition. This detracts from the sense of progress that is soimportant in maintaining motivation. This session aims togive participants a better understanding of how the spiralsyllabus reflects and supports the language learning process, and to explore strategies teachers can use to maintain thatall-important sense of progress. The workshop will offer lotsof practical ideas and will draw on examples from Speakout2nd edition as well as other sources.

TALK
Writing part 2: The agony of choice!

During a stressful exam a bit of certainty can be a truecomfort. In part 1 of their First writing paper our studentsknow they will be confronted with an essay. Part 2, however, requires our students to select from three of four possibletask types. Will they choose wisely? Indeed, how shouldstudents make this choice? Should they develop a favouritegenre? Does it all depend on how comfortable they are withthe topic in question or how much vocabulary they thinkthey know related to it? This session will look at what weteachers can do to make sure our students are as preparedas possible to tackle Part 2 successfully.
